Optics Part2: 4x-Magnifications

American 4x Optic - Trijicon ACOG TA31 RCO

The Trijicon TA31 RCO is a standard issued rifle scope in US forces, designated as M150. It is used with both eyes open, unlike traditional blind sight.

In BF3 it occupies more than a third of the screen space, and has obvious tunnel effect, which results in limited field of view. And the reticle is also much bigger than it is in real life.

In the game's alpha stage, the ACOG had much wider inner space that matched the real life counterpart. But for unknown reason this was revised.

Even though DICE did a good job making the profile looks right. It is, however, not what you'd see when aiming in real actions.

The problem lies in the distance between player's eyes and the scope. As seen in the first picture, although with both eyes open, soldier usually puts his head very close to the scope to gain the most out of the sight. At such a close distance, the four sharp edges would become non-existant, making the scope look round. This also explains why the reticle is so big in BF3's ACOG - because the reticle would be hard to see at current distance if DICE didn't upscale it.

Russian 4x Optic - NPZ PSO-1M2

The most hated scope in BF3 that nobody uses. It comes with a huge eyepiece in sight and shares the same tunnel effect issues with ACOG. A range calculator is presented that can go up to 1,000 meters. But it doesn't work in BF3.

As seen above, PSO was designed to be used as blind sight. But like with ACOG, DICE never made it right. If we remove the eyepiece and make the look distance right, it should look like this:

And if we must have that hood for whatever reason, then it should look like this:

to be continued.... (will do 3.4x on the next part)
